The European Social Survey (ESS) is an academically-driven cross-nationally comparative social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The ESS is a biennial survey covering a wide range of European citizens' economic, moral, social and political attitudes and behaviors and has been conducted in more than thirty European countries The European Social Survey (ESS) is a cross-national survey that has been conducted in around 30 European countries every two years since 2002. In each country, a minimum of 1,500 respondents take part in a one-hour face-to-face interview.

The European Social Survey provides data on attitudes, beliefs and behaviour in 30 countries.ESS is coordinated by the Centre for Comparative Social Surveys (City University, London) in partnership with the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium); GESIS (Germany); NSD (Norway); SCP (Netherlands) and the University of Amsterdam.
